Albion 1 - Articulation/Keyswitching 2014-02-20T21:35:52+00:00 Hi I've just reading the pdf for Albion 1/Redux, what I'm not sure about is articulations and keyswitching them. In the manual it says ARTICULATIONS - Click on these notes to select the different articulations, or indeed press their associated key switches. You can do this while you’re playing; for example, if you want to switch from “long” articulation to a short, hit the key whilst you’re playing your last big not and the next note will be short. A brief guide to these articulations is displayed overleaf. I really like that you can select the different articulations on the Kontakt interface. Though when I press the associated key switch nothing happens? For instance on the String Lo there are 12 articulations but only 4 red keyswitch keys. I changed the articulation as the project was playing by clicking the symbol, though nothing happens when I press the red key, do they have to be assigned? hit the key whilst you’re playing your last big not and the next note will be short. At the moment I'm just clicking the different articulations as the project plays, is there a way of making them more permanent (PLAY had the note keyswitch) so I don't have to keep on clicking on certain sections. Many Thanks star7 https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=319279

One thing that may be holding you back - Are the samples loaded for the articulation you want to play ?
Below the articulation there appears a symbol looking like a computer chip. If samples are loaded this will appear dark. If they are not it will appear ghosted and the keyboard will not show any keys. So, if all your keys are black, except for the red key switches, you will not be able to play a specific articulation.
The number of key switches is relevant to a patch. Also, what will normally be the black keys (sharps/flats) will also be a key switch (within the area of the key switches), so I'm thinking you may not realize this (based on your statement of 4 red keys).
Once switched, the articulation remains permanent until the next switch. You can click on the Lock icon and you will not be able to change articulations then (which causes me to wonder if you have an articulation locked?).
The switches are already assigned but you can change the mapping if you like (see the bottom left of the instrument where it looks like a couple of piano keys). You can use keys or MIDI CC. For playing live obviously you will want them as keys.
The interface is a bit confusing at first. Once you get used to it though it is really good. I recommend going back over the manual so all is very clear. If you have doubts of something read the part again and try to follow what they tell you to do until it comes together for you.
Also, you may not have enabled the info pane. (The "i" in a circle icon at the top of the Kontakt window). I recommend turning on "Info" since as you move your mouse around the Albion instrument you will get hints (bottom of the Kontakt window).

Many thanks for replying,
I got the keyswitches working but I had to assign the articulations to them, they weren't already assigned. Before, when I pressed one of the red keys lets say we're talking about the string lo patch loaded up, the one under the Albion Orchestra section, nothing was happening at all - even though the articulation had loaded - I could change articulation by clicking the mouse.
I pressed CMD and assigned it to one of the red keys, now when I press the relevant key the articulation changes. On the string lo there were four red keys (2 white + 2 black) extra key switches are coloured light green. I don't understand why they didn't change in the first place, plus they were unlocked.
Thanks

I'm glad you were able to get it working.
My best guess to this scenario is you do not have your keyboard and Kontakt "Octave" synced.
I run into this occassionaly when I have Kontakt set up for a "+1 oct" and my keyboard set up to an octave higher. Or vice versa. (See below the pitch wheel and mod wheel on the Kontakt interface.)
I think if you sync the two you will find keyswitching will happen as expected.
To see if you are synced press a key that you think is a keyswitch and notice the key being pressed on the Kontakt keyboard (of course you will have to have set up Kontakt/your DAW to receive midi from the source you wish to use). I'll bet it's an octave higher (or lower depending on your settings) which means you are actually playing a note that doesn't happen to exist in the samples. This causes you to think nothing is happening.
My keyboard is normally set 1 octave higher than Kontakt. (49 keys) So if I want to play a Kontakt instrument properly I have to adjust the settings.
Isn't technology a great thing?
